The Oldest whiz-kid in Wales and beyond

Ray Rees yn derbyn ei kindle Who can say that older people can’t adapt to new technology? Ray Rees, turned 98 recently and is leading the way in embracing it with the passion of a teenager. Twitter, Facebook, Skype, you name it, Ray’s signed in and it could be argued that he’s the oldest whiz kid in Wales and beyond.

A resident of Llys y Coed, Llanfairfechan, Ray was presented with an Amazon Kindle by Business Eryri last week to celebrate his much awaited birthday to enable him to rekindle his hobby of reading his favourite novels electronically.

Ray was enthralled by the gift,

“I’ve had a very nice present – It was a lovely surprise. I now need to learn how to order books on the internet and I’m sure I’ll have hours of enjoyment from it, far easier for me than reading a book. I’m ready to go back onto the internet and for a bit of scandal I’ll go on Twitter.”

Ray has been attending digital story courses provided by Busnes Eryri and has just attained a qualification through Coleg Harlech’s co-operation with Busnes Eryri

He said, “On reflection, the course has given me more confidence. I know now that I can do it. And it’s been well explained. You could not have had a nicer bunch of lads as tutors!”

Ray’s in regular contact with his sons and daughters who live in Canada and New Zealand and the internet has brought them closer,

“ I regularly go on Skype to speak to my son and it’s been fantastic to keep in touch.”

Evie Wyn Jones, Managing Director of Business Eryri Cyf. explained .

“Ray’s Birthday coincided with Busnes Eryri’s last day of the last course of the contracts awarded by the WCVA’s Engagement Gateway project.”

He added “It was thought appropriate that a Kindle be presented to Ray as his interest in new technology had been re-kindled thanks to Busines Eryri’s recent Digital Story courses. We’re very proud that we’ve helped him on the way”.

Eirlys Parry on behalf of North Wales Housing said:

“ We are delighted that our residents at Llys y Coed had the opportunity to be involved in Digital Storytelling.  Ray’s experience is a testimony to how valuable technology is, no matter what your age”
